The light in Julien’s studio was fading, the muted gray of twilight filtering through the arched windows and pooling in the corners of the room. He had yet to light the oil lamp on his worktable, preferring the dimness, which seemed to veil the space in the same solemnity that clung to him. The day’s session with Camille had left him restless, his thoughts knotted like brushstrokes layered too thickly on a canvas.
