The city was nothing like Glenmoor. Its streets hummed with a chaotic energy that Ava found both overwhelming and hollow. The sun hung low in the sky, its dim light barely cutting through the thick gray clouds, and the scent of asphalt and exhaust replaced the earthy whisper of pine and rain that had once been her constant companion. She weaved quietly through the throngs of people on the sidewalk, her bag slung over her shoulder, head down to avoid making eye contact with strangers who moved with purpose around her.
