The plane hummed with a steady rhythm, a cocoon of muffled voices and the occasional rustling of blankets as passengers settled into the monotony of the transatlantic flight. Outside the window, faint pinpricks of light dotted the endless blackness, veiled by the haze of memories too heavy to escape. Claire stared out, her hazel eyes unfocused, her reflection ghostly against the glass. She wasn’t really looking at the sky. She was looking backward, into the quiet places she tried so hard to avoid.
