Chapter 3 — Corporate Shadows
Elena Blackwood
Elena's enhanced senses detected Sarah's anxiety before her CFO even placed the financial report on the desk. The papers carried the sharp tang of fear beneath Sarah's expensive Hermès perfume, and her usually steady heartbeat betrayed a subtle tremor. The numbers told a damning story – systematic losses surrounding each attacked property, including last week's warehouse explosion that had left three security guards with suspicious claw-marked injuries.
The Luna's Tears pendant burned against Elena's collarbone as she traced the edge of the report. "These patterns," she said, forcing corporate calm into her voice despite her wolf's growing agitation beneath her skin. "Walk me through them again."
Sarah adjusted her designer glasses, a tell that made Elena's predatory instincts sharpen. "It started with the Downtown Storage facility," Sarah said, spreading out color-coded spreadsheets. "Fifty thousand dollars vanished through fake maintenance payments. Then similar discrepancies at Miller Street before the 'gas leak.' Now the warehouse – same template, but the numbers are escalating." She hesitated, then added quietly, "Elena, there's something else. These patterns... they align perfectly with the lunar cycle."
The pendant flared hot against Elena's skin just as Marcus Grey's scent hit her – pine, leather, and raw wilderness. Her wolf surged toward the surface, recognizing him before he appeared in her doorway. The simple black tactical gear he wore did nothing to disguise the predator's grace in his movements.
"I'll keep digging," Sarah said, gathering her papers. Her heart rate spiked as she passed Marcus, human instincts sensing the danger he represented. "But Elena... be careful. These numbers suggest someone knows far too much about both sides of your business."
The door clicked shut, leaving Elena alone with Marcus. His presence filled the space differently than any other male's, magnetic and dangerous. The Hunter's Heart Watch at his wrist pulsed in sync with her pendant, both artifacts responding to the waxing moon.
"Your father's influence runs deeper than you realized," Marcus said without preamble, maintaining a careful distance that somehow made her even more aware of him. He pulled out his phone, displaying photos of ancient symbols carved into the building's foundation. "These wards are keyed to the Alpha's Seal. Every attack exploited this weakness – they're using your own defenses against you."
Elena's claws threatened to emerge as rage coursed through her. This was her territory, claimed through human laws and human money. The pendant burned brighter, echoing her fury. "Show me everything."
They moved through the building's security points, Marcus noting vulnerabilities in both modern systems and supernatural wards. His expertise became increasingly evident – the way he anticipated attack vectors, how he read the ancient markings that Elena had never fully understood. Each time his watch pulsed in harmony with her pendant, the air between them seemed to crackle with potential.
In the sub-basement, surrounded by the oldest parts of the structure, Elena's wolf paced restlessly beneath her skin. Marcus traced a pattern on the wall, making ancient territory markers flare to life. The scent of old magic mixed with his wild presence, making it harder for Elena to maintain her careful control.
"We can rebuild them," he said quietly, closer now than he'd been all evening. "Make the wards yours instead of his. But it would require both of us." His watch gleamed brightly, matching the heat of her pendant. "The old magic responds better to wolves working together."
The offer hung between them, heavy with implications. Accepting his help meant acknowledging how deeply the supernatural world still affected her carefully constructed human life. It meant letting him closer, when everything in her human side screamed that closer was dangerous.
Her wolf, traitorously, wanted exactly that.
The memory of Sarah's troubled expression flashed through her mind, along with images of injured employees and violated territories. Her father's influence was a cancer in her company's foundation. She needed every advantage to fight it.
"Tomorrow night," she said finally, stepping away from his warmth. "Bring whatever you need for the warding." She met his gaze directly, letting amber bleed into her eyes. "But this doesn't change anything between us."
His slight smile suggested he knew better, but he simply nodded. As he turned to leave, his watch pulsed one final time, perfectly synchronized with her pendant. The combined glow cast strange shadows on the ancient marks, making them seem almost alive.
Alone in the basement, Elena inhaled deeply, sorting through the lingering scents of old magic, Marcus's wild presence, and – just for a moment – what seemed like her mother's perfume emanating from the pendant. Whether warning or encouragement, she couldn't tell. Tomorrow night would show whether she'd made the right choice.
The quarterly reports waited upstairs, demanding attention. Elena straightened her suit jacket and forced her focus back to the human world of profit margins and market projections. But her wolf remained alert, aware that somewhere in her building, Sarah Chen was uncovering dangerous patterns in seemingly innocent numbers, while Marcus Grey's presence lingered like a promise – or a threat – of changes to come.
The pendant's warmth against her skin reminded her that some changes, once set in motion, couldn't be controlled – only survived.
