The fluorescent lights overhead buzzed faintly, their uneven glow casting shifting shadows across the mirrored walls. Alex leaned back against the cool surface, arms loosely crossed, his gaze drifting to Emma’s profile. She sat stiffly on the opposite side of the cramped elevator, her posture ramrod straight, her hands folded neatly in her lap as if she were back in some boardroom. Her sharp green eyes were focused somewhere far away, her lips pressed into a thin line.
