The homestead loomed around them, its walls breathing with the weight of something unseen, something alive. Andrew couldn’t shake the feeling that the house was watching, its burned and blackened frame pulsating faintly as if it had a heartbeat of its own. The locket in his pocket seemed heavier with every step he took, its cool metal pressing against his thigh like a silent reminder of the questions no one seemed willing to answer. He considered taking it out, examining it, but the thought filled him with an inexplicable sense of dread.
